Autumn & Winter _SWAP
On 9 November, a clothing swap event will take place in our project room at Markgrafenstraße 88. Bring autumn and winter clothes that you no longer wear and exchange them with other participants.

Of course, guests who have nothing to swap but still want to stop by to browse are also welcome. We will provide music, drinks and snacks! The concept of _SWAP was developed by Lea Gleisberg as part of her master's thesis to promote sustainable event organization and responsible business management.

IDZ Meetup during Berlin Design Week
The IDZ Berlin cordially invites you to a get-together during the Berlin Design Week 2023. We are looking forward to welcoming our members as well as guests from Germany and abroad. Among others, Adi Ticho and Nivi Lehavi from Unveil will present their AR platform. Their platform enables artists to show their work in public space. Maybe we will let pigeons fly together? In any case, we can take the opportunity to celebrate a bit the always inspiring shoulder-to-shoulder of design, art and technology....

Unveil Founders:
Adi Ticho & Nivi Lehavi

With a background in design, Adi and Nivi are excited to find the intersection between creativity and technology while working with technology as a creative tool, and using creative thinking to challenge technology.

The two met while studying for a master's degree in Social Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and began working together, now based in Tel Aviv.

Unveil is a platform that presents digital art around the city using augmented reality technology. AR makes it possible to place art anywhere, easily, and create a new experience of art, and of discovering places and stories in the city.
The platform enables AR technology to be a new creative medium.

"Get out of the silos!!" - Prof. Karsten Henze on the training and work situation not only of designers.

Our last virtual Meetup of the year on November 25 is themed: "Get out of the silos!". This is the appeal Prof. Karsten Henze, IDZ board member, design manager and consultant, has chosen to headline his thoughts on the training and work situation not only of designers. "Before we know what we do, we have to know how we think," Joseph Beuys once said. This means that changes in the environment should be accompanied by an awareness of the inner world: Why do we work and think the way we are currently used to? Why should that change? And what might alternatives look like in the future? As always, there will be an opportunity for exchange about this after the lecture.

IDZ Meet-up
As a supporter of the German Design Graduates, the IDZ is awarding free annual memberships to three participants. The three selected will present themselves in the October Meetup.

Our Chairman of the Board Karsten Henze presented our three chosen students with their certificates during the award ceremony at the Kunstgewerbemuseum on October 8. Congratulations to Tobias Trübenbacher from UdK Berlin and Abdelrahman Ibrahim and Tien Han Huang from HTW Berlin!

The three will present their projects on October 28 as part of the IDZ Meetup at the Kunstgewerbemuseum. As usual, we will stream the Meetup live via Zoom.

However, we can also bring a small number of interested people - about 10 people - to the German Design Graduates exhibition. If you would like to attend in person at KGM, please send us an email. If demand exceeds supply, we give away seats on a "first come, first served!" basis.

The initiative German Design Graduates was founded in 2019 to promote young designers, to offer them a platform and to facilitate their start into professional life. Every year, graduates from German universities can submit their designs. The award-winning products and objects of the 2020 and 2021 cohorts will be presented in an exhibition at the Berlin Kunstgewerbemuseum from October 9 to 31.

"As if we were a nation of morons!"- Erik Spiekermann on election posters

When we heard Erik Spiekermann on Deutschlandfunk Kultur the other day, ranting in his usual sharp-tongued way about the election posters for the upcoming super election, we knew immediately: This is our candidate for the pre-election meetup! Thankfully, Erik, who is not only a long-time member but even a former board member of the IDZ, spontaneously agreed, and so we are looking forward to an enjoyable hour with him. Since an election poster rant after the election is less interesting than before, the event will exceptionally not take place as usual on the last Thursday of the month, but already on September 23.

As always, there will be an opportunity for discussion after the presentation.

Helmut Ness and Jeremias Schmitt give an insight into the Fuenfwerken transformation programme "Leadership by Design".

IDZ board member and founding partner of Fuenfwerken Design AG, Helmut Ness, takes us on a short learning journey on the topic of "Leadership by Design" together with Jeremias Schmitt, Executive Director Strategy and Transformation.

In the transformation programme "Leadership by Design", Helmut Ness and Jeremias Schmitt lead us through three consecutive sprints with the aim of letting the participants themselves become the designers of their future. In moderated breakout sessions, they experience through their own doing how to gain clarity, structure challenges, recognise unexpected solutions, set the course for the future and produce concrete results.

At the IDZ Meetup, the two from Fuenfwerken want to convey the programme in an experiential way. In addition to an impulse and the active joint experience of an exercise from the programme, there will be an opportunity for exchange.

Please note: The presentation will be held in German!

In his lecture "The Inconvenience Space - The Future of Parting" Henrik Rieß asks the question: How can we design goodbye?

In his course "The Future of Farewell" at FH Potsdam, Henrik Rieß explored possible future perspectives on the design of of farewell and the associated social consequences with students. To lessen the gravity of the topic and to be able to talk about wishes, hopes and fears, they projected the topic of farewell into different futures with new technological possibilities and changed social norms.

Among others, projects by Rosa-Sophie Hamburger, Lena Hoffmann, Maryna Honcharenko, Peter Schwarz, Gesine Tränhardt and Lena Zagora will be shown.

Henrik Rieß is a Creative Director with over 15 years of expe-rience in UX and applied Design Research. As a lecturer for Interaction Design, Design Thinking and Speculative Design, he works with students on socially relevant issues in the so-called "Inconvenience Space".

Impulse by Christian Kahl (Fuenfwerken), Prof. Matthias Ries and Andreas Viedt. Followed by an open round.

MAMUNA - Masks that help in everyday life and others.
Masks for mouth and nose have become our daily companions and will probably remain so for quite some time. No wonder that many here see a big business opportunity and offer masks at extortionate prices and often of questionable quality.
Mamuna shows that this does not have to be and it can be even better. Because the "provisional" company has found a way to supply the cultural and creative industries (but also other companies) with disposable masks at unrivalled low-priced and at the same time support those who especially need our help.

Prof. Matthias Ries from the Faculty of Design at the HAWK in Hildesheim will give a short presentation on "Design in Crisis" to mark the current situation. He will shed light on both historical developments and current designs that attempt to answer the ambiguous question of design in crisis.

IDZ-Coach Andreas Viedt briefly presents his webinar "Appreciative communication as a value-adding activity" planned for June 18th.

Afterwards open round.

Workshop methods

How do workshops succeed and how does the format support creative collaboration? On 21 February, Esther Schaefer (communication designer and trained process moderator) will share knowledge and experience from her four-year practical experience as a workshop moderator, giving insights into topics such as work culture, role as a moderator or briefing. Subsequently, collegial exchange between the Meetup participants will deepen further aspects of how workshops can advance (design) projects.

About the Expert
Esther Schaefer studied communication design and is a trained process moderator (artop, Berlin). For four years she has been offering companies and organisations workshop moderation of teams and working groups for the development of new solutions. Her focus is on creativity (creativity techniques and design thinking) and collaboration. After graduating in 1998, she worked as a designer, lecturer and project manager, also for the International Design Centre Berlin. She works as a freelance moderator and trainer for Stiftung Warentest, Carlsen Verlag and Deutscher Zukunftspreis.

News from Africa - Nairobi Design Institute

On 24 January 2019, Rolf Mehnert from Fuenfwerken Design AG and UX expert Gunnar Krüger will present their experiences from their stay in Africa. Together with the Nairobi Design Institute they organized an interesting workshop in Africa. The topic: "Mobility in Nairobi".
The focus was on the question of how German automobile manufacturers could meet the complex mobility needs of the inhabitants of a city like Nairobi. At the same time, the joint sprint provided inspiring insights into similarities and differences in design attitudes and approaches from an African and European perspective. Design Thinking made in Africa and in Europe. The week was also intended as a kick-off for potential new students of the NDI to gain an overview of the changing role of design under the conditions of digitisation. The lecture will present the results and provide insights into Nairobi's up-and-coming design scene.

About the experts
Rolf Mehnert is an expert on trends and business design. After completing his training as a typesetter, he studied communication design and finally completed his master's degree in business design. As co-founder of Fuenfwerken Design AG, he gained experience in a wide variety of fields.
