Design Views: WertelOberfell
Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum

Details

Good product design involves a great deal of work and requires plenty of experience and skills. The Design Intent experiences an evolutionary development and needs sufficient time to mature. This not necessarily linear process requires extensive analysis and ultimately also good feeling to make the right decisions at the right time.

WertelOberfell will be working on some experimental designs on site at KGM, and provide insights into their work processes. The focus will be on iterative artwork using 3D printers and CAD programs. In this way, visitors can observe how a design evolves from the first idea – the Design Intent – into its final version.

Opening:

November 28, 4:30pm
Talk and guided tour with the designers, participation with valid museum ticket for free.

Opening Times:

November 28, 2018 – January 13, 2019
Tue – Wed: 10am – 6pm, Sat – Sun: 11am –6pm

Venue:

What Design Can Do

Details

The Dutch designer Richard van der Laken gives an insight into the activities of the international design platform "What Design Can Do". In an open round, concrete examples will be used to discuss which paths are open to designers today: How can design be socially effective? What does it mean to apply design and creativity to the complex and problematic consequences of a globalised economy? How can socially committed design communities network internationally? What formats does "What Design Can Do" offer and how can graduates of Berlin's design schools get involved?

With: Esther Cleven, Manon van Hoekel, Richard van der Laken, Babette Porcelijn, Ake Rudolf

Vitra Design Museum
Anton Lorenz. From avant-garde to industry

Details

For the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the Vitra Design Museum is dedicating an exhibition to the entrepreneur and designer Anton Lorenz for the first time. Lorenz is regarded as a key figure in the development of modern tubular steel furniture. Like hardly any other material, tubular steel embodied the ideals of the Bauhaus avant-garde, such as the quest for a "machine aesthetic" and the search for radically new constructions, as expressed in the famous cantilever chair. The designer owes his importance not only to his furniture designs, but also to his success with patents and company foundations. The exhibition in the show depot includes furniture by legendary designers such as Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as objects and documents from the estate of Anton Lorenz, who belongs to the collection of the Vitra Design Museum.
