IDZ virtual Meet-up
"As if we were a nation of morons!"- Erik Spiekermann on election posters

Details

When we heard Erik Spiekermann on Deutschlandfunk Kultur the other day, ranting in his usual sharp-tongued way about the election posters for the upcoming super election, we knew immediately: This is our candidate for the pre-election meetup! Thankfully, Erik, who is not only a long-time member but even a former board member of the IDZ, spontaneously agreed, and so we are looking forward to an enjoyable hour with him. Since an election poster rant after the election is less interesting than before, the event will exceptionally not take place as usual on the last Thursday of the month, but already on September 23.

As always, there will be an opportunity for discussion after the presentation.

IDZ Meet-up
As a supporter of the German Design Graduates, the IDZ is awarding free annual memberships to three participants. The three selected will present themselves in the October Meetup.

Details

Our Chairman of the Board Karsten Henze presented our three chosen students with their certificates during the award ceremony at the Kunstgewerbemuseum on October 8. Congratulations to Tobias Trübenbacher from UdK Berlin and Abdelrahman Ibrahim and Tien Han Huang from HTW Berlin!

The three will present their projects on October 28 as part of the IDZ Meetup at the Kunstgewerbemuseum. As usual, we will stream the Meetup live via Zoom.

However, we can also bring a small number of interested people - about 10 people - to the German Design Graduates exhibition. If you would like to attend in person at KGM, please send us an email. If demand exceeds supply, we give away seats on a "first come, first served!" basis.

The initiative German Design Graduates was founded in 2019 to promote young designers, to offer them a platform and to facilitate their start into professional life. Every year, graduates from German universities can submit their designs. The award-winning products and objects of the 2020 and 2021 cohorts will be presented in an exhibition at the Berlin Kunstgewerbemuseum from October 9 to 31.

UX Design Awards Deep Dive Award Winners | Smartarchivo
Chroma Experience Founder and CEO Martin Brecht-Precht will walk us through the project “Smartarchivo - digital documentation in nuclear medicine and radiochemistry”, which was awarded a “Special Mention” in the Concept category at the 2021 UX Design Awards.

Details

Smartarchivo is used by rapp-iso GmbH to digitalize documentation and administration processes in nuclear medicine. The testing of utilized instruments is carried out using a radioactive test source. Smartarchivo analyses and evaluates the measured values and replaces error-prone analogue processes. The values are compared with applicable radiation protection guidelines, industry standards and legal requirements so reports can be generated for supervisory authorities and medical bodies. You can register for the Zoom session here!

Our Juror Judith Peeten describes what the jury found remarkable about the project: “Smartarchivo digitizes documentation and administration processes, replaces analog procedures in the nuclear medicine context and can retrieve values and measurements at any time in the applications. Information is presented in a coherent and logical order to provide focus and to guide the user. Users only see information and options that are required to perform a single task in the respective context. The resulting clarity of the user interface allows users to complete the task at hand in a short time without changing context and with minimal cognitive challenge.”

The UXDA Deep Dive offers a behind-the-scenes look at award-winning projects and shines a spotlight on key team members. It will be moderated by Ake Rudolf, Head of Strategy / Award Director at the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ).

Hapticlabs.io – A Prototyping Toolkit for Tactile Interactions

Details

Bzzz bzzz – haptic feedback is part of every physical interaction, yet active feedback is rarely found in current products. Ever wondered what a buzzing shoe, a purring pillow or a rumbling wallet would feel like? The complexity of the current design process requires weeks of research and missing tools make the concept evaluation a major challenge.

Hapticlabs.io introduces a toolkit making designing, prototyping and evaluating tactile feedback become a breeze. It allows designers, engineers and researchers across disciplines to explore our sense of touch without requiring any previous experience and breaks down the process into simple steps. The toolkit involves a digital application to design the feedback, a portable hardware to play it back and an open-source knowledge-base to get you started with everything you need to know.

IDZ virtual Meetup
"Get out of the silos!!" - Prof. Karsten Henze on the training and work situation not only of designers.

Details

Our last virtual Meetup of the year on November 25 is themed: "Get out of the silos!". This is the appeal Prof. Karsten Henze, IDZ board member, design manager and consultant, has chosen to headline his thoughts on the training and work situation not only of designers. "Before we know what we do, we have to know how we think," Joseph Beuys once said. This means that changes in the environment should be accompanied by an awareness of the inner world: Why do we work and think the way we are currently used to? Why should that change? And what might alternatives look like in the future? As always, there will be an opportunity for exchange about this after the lecture.
