Our member of the month July/August 2023 is the product designer and university lecturer Prof. Matthias Ries. After studying at the HfG Karlsruhe, he founded his own studio in Berlin. For about ten years he has been active in teaching, currently as a professor at the HAWK in Hildesheim. Here he is primarily concerned with theoretical aspects of product design. He is currently researching with his students in the project "With a little help of AI friends" how artificial intelligence can be used as a tool in product design.

His ongoing PhD at UdK Berlin investigates cultural memory and the collecting and accumulating of products throughout human history. He is interested in what selection criteria play a role in archiving into material memory and to what extent gaps in cultural memory are created, or deliberately created, as a result.
