The main goal of Ecodesign is to design products and services as sustainable as possible by finding intelligent ways of using resources and energy, and by avoiding substances that are harmful to the environment and health as well as keeping production waste to a minimum. Life-cycle-thinking and longevity along with the responsible handling of harmful substances and the avoidance of pollutants and waste are the main principles of Ecodesign.
With the professional and financial support of the German Federal Environmental Foundation the IDZ has been conducting the project »Ecodesign as contribution to an environmental conscious and material-efficient product design« from 2015 to 2018. Its aim was to strengthen the market acceptance of Ecodesign among small and medium-sized enterprises and to sensitize design offices and agencies for this subject. To spread more knowledge and know-how about Ecodesign processes, technologies, environmentally compatible materials, ecological principles, longevity and reparability, the IDZ organized workshops, a travelling exhibition presenting the nominees and winners of the German Federal Ecodesign Award, and accompanying events such as symposia, panel discussions and networking meet-ups.
Core target group of the project were small and medium-sized enterprises that have little to no prior experiences with applying Ecodesign principles and criteria. The project aimed to address and encourage company representatives (ranging from the product designer and constructor to the marketing manager) just as well as designers to apply and get inspired by ecological principles.
