Paula Scher – Type is Image
The exhibition is dedicated to the work of Paula Scher, one of the most influential and successful graphic artists of her generation.
With Type is Image, Die Neue Sammlung continues its tradition of inviting important contemporary designers to a site-specific installation. Paula Scher, who has been shaping graphic design with her innovative creativity for over five decades, has accepted this invitation with a walk-in exhibition of her work.
Until September 2024, the exhibition shows commissioned works from Scher's beginnings to the present day: from the appearance of the Public Theater in New York to the campaign for Rockaway Beach after the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 to her room and façade designs.
From the floor to the walls to the hanging letters and posters, the exhibition Type is Image offers visitors the opportunity to be surrounded by Paula Scher's work. Even the display cases are supported by letters. From every angle, new perspectives and interesting interplays of different works emerge.

Temporary Bauhaus Archiv - Art on the Building
In Berlin-Tiergarten, the Bauhaus Archive is currently being renovated in accordance with the preservation order and expanded with a new building. Twelve artists developed concepts for the new museum as part of a Europe-wide art-in-building competition to be held in spring 2023. The winning design has now been selected and, together with the other eleven concepts submitted, will be shown in an exhibition at the temporary bauhaus-archiv from October 24.
The Bauhaus Archive was founded in 1960 as a non-profit association out of civic commitment. In 1979, the museum building on the Landwehrkanal in Berlin-Tiergarten, which was designed by Walter Gropius and is now a listed building, opened. Since 2018, the Bauhaus Archive has been undergoing renovation - it is currently being refurbished and expanded in line with its status as a listed building. Part of this building task - and an integral element of building culture in Germany - is "Kunst am Bau": the obligation to use part of the construction costs of public buildings for works of art. For this purpose, the State of Berlin, represented by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion, in coordination with the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as well as the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design, announced a non-open single-phase art competition with a preceding Europe-wide open application procedure.
On September 26, 2023, the time had come - the winning design was chosen!
The exhibition presents the design recommended for realization by the jury as well as the other eleven concepts submitted in the art competition - and thus shows how differently and diversely artists react to the architecture and use of the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design.

Do we need new and radical motifs, approaches, or images for a change in consciousness?

- Prof. Dr. Felix Kosok, graphic designer and design scientist
- Mara Recklies, philosopher specializing in design theory and criticism

WirDesign - Marke in Motion
The fast pace of social media means that no company can avoid moving images any more. Solutions are needed that reduce the production costs for these short videos. But how do you ensure that the moving image content also fits the brand?
The upcoming edition of Brands & Bytes on November 8, 2023 will discuss the challenges involved and what tips and tools are already available.
Together with two experts from why do birds, an agency for audio branding & motion design, we will tackle the topic and share our experiences and solutions with you.

Andreas Koop - Stadt.Land.Schluss.
In Marktoberdorf on November 10 and 11, the transdisciplinary symposium "Stadt.Land.Schluss" is all about (post-)growth and poses the question: "How can we do less?". The conference offers interesting lectures, opportunities for exchange and a joint hike in the Allgäu region at the end.
How to design not less, but the less. What does this mean for a society based on growth? How can design contribute to ensuring that our livelihoods are not destroyed? We do not have a problem of knowledge, but a problem of implementation. If you look at the influence that advertising and design have on people's behavior, for example, you can see the potential.
Whether it's climate change, the finite nature of resources or social justice: in the medium term at least, there will have to be an ecological and social transformation of the economy. How are companies and politicians dealing with this? Do they act or react? How do they face up to the change, the challenges? Does less even have more opportunities?
