Our first Circular Design Forum on June 14 brought together designers, scientists and experts from multiple countries at EUREF Campus in Berlin discussing sustainable design approaches. In panel talks & workshops, the speakers gave insight into circular economies, political frameworks and future-orientated business models. The speakers included Leyla Acaroglu, Arndt Pechstein and Anne Raudaskoski.

Don't miss our new Design Views exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum: In the work of design collective Additive Addicted technologies of digital manufacturing and the millennia-old material porcelain meet and interact with one another. This way, objects with delicate, highly complex structures that resemble textiles were developed.

Joint Brokerage Events

Organized in cooperation with the +86 design sharing platform in Beijing, the JBE on 3 June will focus on re-branding, reinventing food products, designing food packaging and service design.

The event is aimed at Berlin and Chinese companies working in the fields of design and sustainable technologies.

The deadline for the second of the two 2022 UX Design Awards Calls for Participation has been extended to 3 June. Make it count and enter your best work now!

German Federal Ecodesign Award

Jury & Expo

In its meeting on 16 September, the #BPEcodesign19 jury nominated 31 projects out of 130 accepted submissions for the German Federal Ecodesign Award 2019.

The special exhibition at the Designers' Open in Leipzig from 25 to 27 October offers a last chance to see last year's prizewinners and nominees.


News from Africa

On 24 January, Rolf Mehnert from Fuenfwerken Design AG and UX expert Gunnar Krüger will present their experiences from their stay in Africa. Together with the Nairobi Design Institute they organized an interesting workshop in Africa. The topic: »Mobility in Nairobi«.

EcoDesign Circle 4.0

EcoDesign Sprint 4.0

In mid-November we conducted the pilot of the EcoDesign Sprint 4.0.

Peter Post, Managing Director of Scholz & Volkmer and expert in service and UX design, and Markus Vihma, consultant for circular design and recycling management, developed numerous ideas for digital services with representatives of the management and various divisional managers of a large German furniture manufacturer.

Exhibition finissage

On 25 November, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze and the President of the Federal Environment Agency Maria Krautzberger honoured the twelve winners of the Federal Ecodesign Award 2019. You can find all the award-winning projects on the newly designed Award-website.

The application period for the Federal Ecodesign Award 2020 starts in January.

SMEs that want to advance the topic of circular economy and tackle the transition from linear to circular business models are cordially invited to apply for the EcoDesign Sprint 4.0 pilot organized by the IDZ as part of the EU project EcoDesign Circle 4.0!

IDZ Compact Training

Job Clarification

Investing in the beginning – this helps to avoid misunderstandings and annoyance. It releases energy for creativity and builds trust.

In September/October 2021, we will again offer an online compact training with IDZ coach and wirDesign co-founder Andreas Viedt with a total of four dates. The first of the four sessions will be held on September 16.

50 years IDZ

Discussion Evening

50 years ago the IDZ was opened in Budapester Straße in Charlottenburg. Exhibitions were shown, lectures were held - and debates were fierce.

On April 17th, to the day on the 50th anniversary of the IDZ, we would like to take up the debates held at that time under the theme "The Human Measure: Making Cities Worth Living in" in the Stadtwerkstatt.

Transforming People & Places II

Redesigning the Asphalt

On April 30, the second event in the series, which was launched in cooperation with Archimedes Exhibitions, will once again focus on urban mobility – from urban design and smart mobility to sharing and participation and climate change.

The series creates space for exchange and discussion between the designers and residents of our city.

Autumn/Winter 21/22

The DACH Showroom continues this season. In Vienna, Berlin and Tokyo, buyers have the opportunity to view the fall/winter collections of 19 designers, including nine from Berlin. In the new virtual showroom, buyers and press representatives can also experience the collections digitally and call up all relevant information.

Nominees announced

The jury has convened and nominated 25 submissions, including imaginative packaging solutions, new ideas for the clothing industry, and innovations from more niche sectors such as fishing.

All nominees are presented on the website of the Bundespreis Ecodesign.

Call for applications

Until 18 April, innovative, well-designed, and sustainable projects can once again apply for the government's highest award for ecological design.

Applications can be submitted via the website of the German Ecodesign Award.

The IDZ continues its series of events with a retrospective of Aicher's exhibition and book „kritik am auto - schwierige verteidigung des autos gegen seine anbeter“.

Deep Dive: Award Winners

On 6 July, Leopold Hoepner and Antoine Nivet of “why do birds” will showcase their #UXDA22 product award winning project “MusiCurve”.

MusiCurve is an easy-to-use software tool that allows users to change the intensity of a piece of music and adapt it to the dramaturgy of a film.

German Design Graduates

As a supporter of the German Design Graduates, the IDZ has awarded free annual memberships to three participants. Congratulations to Tobias Trübenbacher, Abdelrahman Ibrahim and Tien Han Huang! The three will present their projects on 28 October at the IDZ Meetup in the exhibition at KGM Berlin. We will be streaming live via Zoom.

bread and games

This summer marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Otl Aicher created a style-defining design system for them with the rainbow as the color palette and a dachshund as the mascot.

On August 26, as part of our initiative, we will pay tribute to Aicher's contribution and discuss the political dimension of the games.


From Eyes to Ears

Whether Siri, Alexa, voice control or brand voice - the topic of voice is becoming increasingly present in the design context.

On 22.02.2022, in cooperation with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, we offer for the first time the workshop "From Eyes to Ears" developed by Prof. Daniela Hensel and Judith Ziemer on the exciting topic of design and voice.

In our online talk "There is another way" on 19 May, three former winners will show how sustainable consumption can succeed and tell what has become of their projects. In addition, Lisa Frien-Kossolobow, expert for sustainable consumption at the German Environment Agency, gives information and tips on how we can make environmentally friendly decisions.

Online Platform

On May 13, Otl Aicher would have had his 100th birthday. The IDZ pays tribute to this great designer with the online platform - a curated space that provides information about his life and work and invites discourse.

It is flanked by a series of events that approach Otl Aicher's work from today's perspective.

German Ecodesign Award

... goes Austria!

The travelling exhibition "Future is now!", focusing on the winners of the German Ecodesign Award 2021, will be shown at the Circular Design Week Tirol in Innsbruck from 20 June to 1 July.

In addition to the exhibition, the program includes inspiring lectures, exciting workshops and information events on the topic of circular economy.
